This site is no longer functioning. Modern services such as Waze, and even Google Maps to an extent, provide the service that this creator envisioned way back in 2009 (17 years ago at the time of this post). Please drive safe!

New Canaan Cops Twitter wants you to stay out of trouble.

NC Cops Twitter is NOT affiliated with the New Canaan Police Department, and was started by an NCHS student. NC Cops Twitter Alerts can help you drive safer in New Canaan notifying you of speed traps, checkpoints and potential crackdown schedules posted in area newspapers.

The innovative part about this Twitter service is that the entire community may contribute alerts via a text message. Subscribe to the Twitter feed to receive alerts submitted by the community at large.

What's Twitter?

Twitter is a website which allows you to subscribe to user-generated information contained in 140 character messages. You can find other user's information you consider important and follow their 'feed'. Twitter can also work with any cell phones capable of text messaging, not just smart phones. In other words you can publish 'tweets' by sending a text message, and you can choose which user's tweets you want delivered via text message to your phone.

F.A.Q.

When should I send alerts?
You should add your alerts whenever you feel like you would have wanted to be alerted.  Friday and Saturday nights are a good place to start though.  Speed traps and checkpoint locations are game, as well as any other police activity when it appears they are looking for trouble rather than defending us from it.  All alerts are prescreened before being forwarded to twitter, so repeat alerts for the same situation may be ignored.  SEND TO (###)-### -###

What is twitter?
Twitter is a way for people to share bits of information to whoever wants them.  The owner of the Twitter feed dictates the content they send out.  It is used by celebrities to say how much they paid for their last latte, by businesses to announce sales, and by people who want to stay closely connected with a cause.  Twitter works online as well as with cell phones, so you don't need to be near your computer to receive updates.

Do I need to register for twitter to receive alerts?
Yes.  You need to register for twitter to receive alerts.  This takes only a couple minutes.  Then you must "follow" the New Canaan Cops twitter feed.

How do I register?
Go to www.twitter.com and click "Sign up now" on the right.  Fill in the required information, and finalize the creation of your account via your email.

How do I subscribe to NewCanaanCops Twitter?
Sign into your twitter account (twitter.com/login) and choose the "Find People" option in the upper right, search for "New Canaan Cops".  Choose the NC Cops icon and click "Follow".  (Now you will be subscribed only online.)

How do I receive alerts on my cell phone?
From your home page after login choose the "Settings" window go to the "Mobile" tab and enter the necessary information.   Choose "Following".  The first icon after each person you follow will allow you to choose to send their 'tweets' to your phone.

Is this illegal?
No.  Not to my knowledge.  Is it illegal to tell your mom that there is a speed trap up the road?  It is not interfering with any police work (to my knowledge) and is covered by freedom of speech.
